AIMGA is pleased to offer an evening IELTS Preparation Course on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting January 7th. This 25-hour course consists of 10 classes from 6:00 to 8:30PM on January 7, 9, 14, 16, 21, 23, 28, 30 and February 4 & 6, and will be taught by Katherine Anderson, an experienced English language instructor and an IELTS assessor.Katherine has worked for several colleges and universities in Calgary,recently delivering the Communication Skills for Health Professionals
program at Mount Royal University, and currently teaching a variety of IELTS preparation courses. She is passionate about working with advanced-level students, particularly IMGs. Katherine obtained bachelor’s degrees in both philosophy and religious studies, before earning a master’s degree in adult education and a TESL certificate.

Description

Course Description:

The Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) Preparation Program assists Internationally Trained Physicians preparing for the National Assessment Collaboration (NAC) and/or the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Exam Part 2 (MCCQE2). The competencies and the objectives for the NAC OSCE and QE2 are reviewed and the expectations of a PGY1 resident versus a PGY2 resident are outlined for the different case scenarios presented. These sessions are facilitated by an experienced medical educator from UofA. Standardized patients are used for hands-on practice. The sessions focus on taking an organized history, clinical knowledge and skills, physical exam skills, the think-aloud technique, approach to the patient, ethics, professionalism, communication and decision-making abilities.

The program objectives are:

  • to understand the exam objectives, format, and assessment criteria
  • to increase clinical knowledge, decision-making, and management across a broad range of cases through discussion on current evidence and interactive, hands-on practice scenarios and feedback
  • to review specific tasks such as case presentations, interpreting of results based on expected formats
  • to enhance communication, cultural and language skills relative to patient-centered care and the Canadian context
  • to familiarize oneself with time frames allotted for demonstrating competencies

Limited spaces are available for this OSCE Preparation Program. Members who wish to participate must be an active member of AIMGA and have a complete profile. They must also commit to full participation and AIMGA’s attendance policy (80%) as well as take part in follow up survey after the exam to obtain feedback.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Have proof of registration for either the NAC OSCE or MCCE2 (Spring); no exceptions

The preparations sessions are scheduled on Thursdays, starting on January 9th and continues to Thursday, March 26th.

The Career Transition Program (CTP) assists IMGs who are considering an alternative pathway into the Canadian health care system as a short or long-term career goal. The workshop will cover the following topics:

Description

AIMGA is pleased to offer MCAP (Medical Communication Assessment Program: A Preparation Program for Successful Integration into Practice), which was formerly known as our C-CRASH (Communication, Critical Reasoning, Attitude and Skills in Healthcare)/MCAP course. This course is aimed at preparing physicians for successful integration into the Canadian healthcare system. An emphasis will be placed on communication, critical reasoning, and the attitude and skills required for a patient-centred, collaborative-care model.

Face-to-face sessions are facilitated by practicing physicians and a medical communication educator, and include practice cases with standardized patients and feedback. This program is geared towards those going into practice via CaRMS or the Practice Readiness Assessment (PRA) route.

Sessions start on January 22 and end on March 25, and will be held on Wednesdays from 6:00–9:00PM at either the AIMGA Calgary office (Room 105B, 1409 Edmonton Trail NE) or MedSkills, Health Sciences Centre, University of Calgary (3330 Hospital Drive NW).
