AIMGA’s Community health and wellness group meetings are held on Fridays from 9:30 to 11:00am. This group consists of members who joined our COVID Response Team to assist AHS with Cargill Food Outbreak. Our members called employees to educate them in first languages and created video-mediated materials in 19+ languages to educate newcomers in Alberta about COVID19. These video-mediated materials are available on our COVID19 page on our website and we encourage you to share these. If your language is not listed and you’d like to contribute, please contact Nuruddin at nuruddin@aimga.ca.

Our members have also conducted webinars in first languages and in English to newcomers enrolled in ESL classes.

The Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Exam Part 1 Study Group is facilitated by a moderator to assist IMGs to prepare for this examination. The current moderator is Dr. Nuruddin Lakhani. These sessions are being offered online due to COVID-19.

The MCCQE Part I is a summative examination that assesses the critical medical knowledge and clinical decision-making ability of a candidate at a level expected of a medical student who is completing his or her medical degree in Canada. The examination is based on the MCC Objectives, which are organized under the CanMEDS roles. Candidates graduating and completing the MCCQE Part I normally enter supervised practice. Aside from formal accreditation processes of the undergraduate and postgraduate education programs, the MCCQE Part I is the only national standard for medical schools across Canada and, therefore, is administered at the end of medical school.

The MCCQE Part I is a one-day, computer-based test. Candidates have four hours in the morning to complete 210 Multiple-Choice Questions and up to three and a half hours in the afternoon for the Clinical Decision-Making component, which consists of 38 cases with short-menu and short-answer write-in questions. For specialist IMGs, the QE1 requires a complete review of all areas of medicine.

AIMGA’s MCCQE1 study groups are offered throughout the year on a quarterly basis. AIMGA provides computer software study materials and other relevant resources as a means of preparation (i.e. UWorld, QBank, MCC Preparation materials).

The Career Transition Program (CTP) IMGs has been made possible by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to assist IMGs who are considering an alternative pathway into the Canadian health care system as a short or long-term career goal. There are 30 seats available in the program. These seats are open to IRCC eligible members (i.e. Permanent Residents).

The application deadline for this program is Thursday, September 3, 2020, at 11:59 PM!

The goals of the Career Transition Program are to:

  • increase IMGs’ overall knowledge and awareness of alternative career pathways through a series of employment-related workshops
  • provide IMGs with an opportunity to meet with fellow physicians in alternative careers and to obtain feedback from employment coaches and HR consultants
  • equip IMGs with the tools necessary to manage their own career paths
  • arrange a 50-hour job shadowing placement in an area participants wish to pursue

Workshops

Workshops will take place on the Saturdays listed below, from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. Guest speakers and mentors will be incorporated into these workshops.

Job shadowing

Each participant will have the opportunity to complete a 50-hour job shadowing placement to explore an area of interest. Schedules and times will vary and are based on the host/participant’s availability.

Eligibility

To be considered for the program, participants must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be an AIMGA member in good standing
  • Must be IRCC eligible (i.e., Permanent Resident)
  • Must be able to complete 80% of the program, which is equivalent to two absences
  • Must be committed to seeking employment or enrolling in an education program related to their alternative career path within the next six months
Funding

This program is funded by IRCC as it aligns with their commitment to support Permanent Residents in Canada. If you are a Canadian citizen interested in the program, we encourage you to apply and we will assess if we can fund your seat via other means.

This year the campaign focuses on the role of nurses in the prevention and management of diabetes. 
In recognition of the theme, AIMGA has invited two nurses, Heather Kerr and Claire Mills, who have been supporting the assessment and integration of Internationally Trained Healthcare Professionals. They will join us to speak about nursing in the Canadian context. Following this, our very own Fauzia Moyeen, a diabetes expert and AIMGA member, will provide updates on the latest guidelines for management of diabetes.

Speakers:

Fauzia Moyeen

Fauzia Moyeen, has provided training in more than 15 countries in the field of diabetes management and diabetes education. In recognition for her work, she was appointed as the Head of Academics in King Saud University in Saudi Arabia, where she had the platform to create, innovate, and design curriculum for different para-medical and medical staff in the field of chronic diseases in addition to conducting seminars, international conferences, and train-the-trainer programs.

Fauzia loves to educate and has presented at over 300 international, national conferences, workshops and focus groups. Fauzia has a passion for diabetes education and believes education is the corner stone in managing all chronic diseases. In her career as a trainer, she has practiced successfully the theory of empowerment, has vast experience providing training to multicultural audiences, delivered successfully Insulin Pumps and sensors training, and has a keen interest in Type 1 Diabetes in children and the psycho-social aspects of the disease.

She is an active member of Diabetes Canada and works as Director Membership for Calgary Chapter. Fauzia is actively participating as a speaker & trainer for various clinics and organizations in Calgary.

Heather Kerr RN, BScN, MPH

Heather Kerr is a passionate pediatric community health nurse and educator. She has been a faculty member of the Mount Royal University School of Nursing and Midwifery since 2004 and has taught a variety of courses in both the Bridge to Canadian Nursing and Bachelor of Nursing programs. She was program coordinator of the Bridge to Canadian Nursing Program from 2016- 2017. Heather has also been involved in the substantially equivalent competency (SEC) assessment process as an assessor with the Internationally Educated Nurses Assessment Center in Alberta. She was a consultant in the Capacity Building of IEN Assessments project building capacity within western Canada and established SEC assessment processes and tools in collaboration with government and regulatory bodies. As an educator and advocate, Heather has participated in a variety of projects supporting international health care professionals in their transition to professional practice and has developed a deep understanding of the challenges they face.  Heather is dedicated to supporting internationally-educated health care professionals in their transition and integration to the Canadian health care system.

Claire Mills

Claire Mills is a senior health care professional (leader, manager, and educator). For the past four years, she has been the Clinical Placement Coordinator at the Faculty of Nursing, University of Calgary with responsibilities to procure clinical placements for 700- 800 clinical placements per term. Prior to this role she was an Educational Consultant with Rural Programs for Physicians and Nurses in the department of Continuing Medical Education in the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary.

She has been involved in various capacities with competency level examinations for internationally educated nurses and physicians since 2018, specifically: Chief Examiner for the International Nurses Exams past three years, Standardized Nurse for MCC exams, Examiner for MCC exams, and an MMI Evaluator. She holds to a philosophy that healthcare practitioners will flourish when there is an atmosphere of reciprocal positive relationships

AIMGA is pleased to host a journal club for members who wish to maintain their clinical knowledge and skills through weekly review sessions with fellow members. The purpose of the journal club is to review, discuss and evaluate published articles. The sessions are moderated by one of our members with a background in research and Public Health.

Dr. Turin Chowdhury from Community Medicine, University of Calgary provides a monthly lecture to ensure you have a foundational understanding of research methodology, clinical epidemiology, and statistics to critically appraise articles. The club is also an excellent opportunity for an exchange of insights regarding clinical problems. Our current session is ongoing and members interested must join at the beginning of the course in order to fully benefit from this program. This is an excellent course for those interested in research opportunities and joining AIMGA’s research team.

If you are interested in joining our upcoming journal club and are looking to gain a foundational understanding of research methods and developing your critical appraisal skills to assess and interpret publications accurately, our next session will begin in September.
