Research lectures are provided by Dr.Turin Tanvir Chowdhury, Community Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Calgary on the first Friday of each month starting on Friday April, 3rd and ending August 7th. These sessions are for journal club members only and currently offered online via Zoom.

If you are interested in joining our journal club and are looking to gain a foundational understanding of research methods and developing your critical appraisal skills to assess and interpret publications accurately, our next journal club will begin in September.

AIMGA is pleased to host a journal club for members who wish to maintain their clinical knowledge and skills through weekly review sessions with fellow members. The purpose of the journal club is to review, discuss and evaluate published articles. The sessions are moderated by one of our members with a background in research and Public Health.

Dr. Turin Chowdhury from Community Medicine, University of Calgary provides a monthly lecture to ensure you have a foundational understanding of research methodology, clinical epidemiology, and statistics to critically appraise articles. The club is also an excellent opportunity for an exchange of insights regarding clinical problems. Our current session is ongoing and members interested must join at the beginning of the course in order to fully benefit from this program. This is an excellent course for those interested in research opportunities and joining AIMGA’s research team.

AIMGA is holding an MCCQE2 study group online for those doing the exam in the fall. The study group consists of six sessions in total from 2:30-4:00PM on Tuesday, June 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 and July 7.

AIMGA is pleased to offer an evening IELTS Preparation Course online on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting June 2nd to July 9th. This 30-hour course consists of 12 classes from 6:00 to 8:30PM on June 2, 4, 9, 11, 16, 18, 23, 25, 30 and July 2, 7, and 9.The course will be taught by AIMGA’s Katherine Anderson, an experienced English language instructor and IELTS assessor. A focus on writing is emphasized as this is the area most IMGs have challenges with when it comes to meeting language requirements set by regulatory bodies.

Katherine has worked for several colleges and universities in Calgary. She taught the Communication Skills for Health Professionals program at Mount Royal University, and has taught a variety of IELTS preparation courses. She is passionate about working with advanced-level students, particularly IMGs. Katherine obtained bachelor degrees in both philosophy and religious studies, before earning a master’s degree in adult education and a TESL certificate.

This course is no longer one of our funded courses and is being offered on a fee for service basis. The cost is $180 plus GST for a total of $189

A minimum of ten participants is required for this course to take place.

Course Description:

The Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) Study Group assists Internationally Trained Physicians in preparing for the National Assessment Collaboration (NAC).  The competencies and the objectives for the NAC OSCE are reviewed and the expectations of a PGY1 resident are outlined for the different case scenarios presented. These sessions are facilitated by Dr. Bruce Fisher, an experienced medical educator from U of A.  The sessions will be offered online and therefore focus on various case stems. Focus will be on taking an organized history, the approach to the patient, ethics, professionalism, communication, and decision-making abilities as to how to proceed. Cases will be discussed based on most recent evidence and guidelines.

The 6 online sessions will start on Tuesday, June 16th and finish on Tuesday, July 21st. 

The program objectives are:

  • to understand the exam objectives, format, and assessment criteria
  • to increase clinical knowledge, decision-making, and management across a broad range of cases through discussion on current evidence, practice and feedback
  • to review specific tasks such as case presentations, interpreting of results based on expected formats
  • to enhance communication, cultural and language skills relative to patient-centered care and the Canadian context
  • to familiarize oneself with time frames allotted for demonstrating competencies

Spaces are limited to 15 seats as per the instructor’s request to allow for meaningful discussion, practice, and feedback. Therefore, members may only register for one session (i.e. Tuesday group or Wednesday group or Friday group). Do not register for this group if you are unable to attend all 6 sessions.

Eligibility Requirements:

These sessions are only for members who are scheduled to do the NAC OSCE in September. Therefore, you will need to send your proof of registration to Monica (by Monday, June 22nd) at monica@aimga.ca.

These sessions are typically one-hour in length to assist you by reviewing application submissions, resumes, and personal statements for grammatical correctness and clarity. AIMGA also offers a CaRMS Preparation Program which we highly recommend for those applying to CaRMS (Canadian Residency Matching System).

Employment Related Services (30-minute or 1-hour consultations):
