Description:

This Study Group assists Internationally Trained Physicians in preparing for the NAC OSCE. The competencies and the objectives for the NAC OSCE are reviewed and the expectations of a PGY1 resident are outlined for the different case scenarios presented. The sessions focus on taking an organized history, demonstrating clinical knowledge, physical exam skills, the think-aloud technique, approach to the patient, ethics, professionalism, communication, and decision-making abilities.

Classes will be held online on Wednesdays from 1pm to 4pm from January 31st-April 17th 2024

This study group is for those with proof of registration for the May exam.

This study group will be facilitated by Dr Rogers Thomas.

The program objectives are:

  • to understand the exam objectives, format, and assessment criteria;

  • to enhance communication, cultural and language skills relative to patient-centered care and the Canadian context; and

Dr. Tuga Yousif will be facilitating these sessions from February 3rd to April 27th, 2024 with the exemption of March 30th because of the Easter Holiday from 9:00am to 1:00pm MST. Dr. Tuga Yousif is a physician from Sudan. She has a passion for teaching and will be conducting the online sessions for members who are registered for the NAC OSCE Exam in May!

** Proof of registration will be required to register and can be sent to Toju (toju@aimga.ca) if you have not yet sent it.

What is the TDM? The Therapeutics Decision-Making (TDM) Examination aims to assess the competence of candidates at the level required of a family physician practicing independently and safely in Canada. The content is developed by the Medical Council of Canada (MCC), and the examination is administered by the MCC on behalf of the Practice-Ready Assessment (PRA) programs for use in the selection of candidates into PRA programs.

AIMGA’s Study Group! This is a 10-week preparation program for those who have been deemed PRA eligible as a family medicine practitioner. AIMGA has a 99% pass rate for those who have been part of our TDM study group.

Meet our Moderator! Dr. Hira Waqar was born in Pakistan and moved to Canada in 2001. After finishing her high school, she completed her BSc in Biology from the University of Calgary. She then went on to get a MD degree from the American University of Caribbean. She completed clinical rotations in hospitals in the United States and England. Hira recently completed her family medicine training from Pakistan. She successfully passed the TDM and is looking forward to working with members of AIMGA to do the same.

Please note this class is only for members who have PRA Eligibility in the area of family medicine and/or TDM registration. Please send proof to info@aimga.ca to be registered for this study group.

The Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Exam Part 1 Study Group is facilitated by a moderator to assist IMGs to prepare for this examination. Currently, we have several moderators for the QE1 at AIMGA. These sessions are being offered online.

The MCCQE Part I is a summative examination that assesses the critical medical knowledge and clinical decision-making ability of a candidate at a level expected of a medical student who is completing his or her medical degree in Canada. The examination is based on the MCC Objectives, which are organized under the CanMEDS roles. Candidates graduating and completing the MCCQE Part I normally enter supervised practice. Aside from formal accreditation processes of the undergraduate and postgraduate education programs, the MCCQE Part I is the only national standard for medical schools across Canada and, therefore, is administered at the end of medical school.

The MCCQE Part I is a one-day, computer-based test. Candidates have four hours in the morning to complete 210 Multiple-Choice Questions and up to three and a half hours in the afternoon for the Clinical Decision-Making component, which consists of 38 cases with short-menu and short-answer write-in questions. For specialist IMGs, the QE1 requires a complete review of all areas of medicine.

AIMGA’s MCCQE1 study groups are offered throughout the year on a quarterly basis. AIMGA provides study materials through our in-person medical library and other relevant resources as a means of preparation. We also have quest speakers that contribute to specialty area topics on a quarterly basis.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

The Career Transition Program (CTP) has been made possible by Government Of Alberta to assist International Medical Graduates (IMGs) who are considering an alternative pathway into the Canadian health care system as a short or long-term career goal.

The goals of the Career Transition Program are to:

  • Increase IMGs’ overall knowledge and awareness of alternative career pathways through a series of employment-related workshops,
  • Provide IMGs with an opportunity to meet with fellow IMGs in alternative careers and to obtain feedback from employment coaches and mentors, and
  • Equip IMGs with the tools necessary to manage their own career paths.

Program Format

The Career Transition Program consists of the following:

  • Weekly career workshops with guest speakers
  • Opportunities to connect with potential mentors/employers
  • One on one coaching session with Career Transition Programs Employment Coach.

Workshops 

This program consists of 10 workshops covering the following topics:

  • Managing transitions
  • Making the most of change
  • Dealing with the loss of professional identity
  • Finding a job in Canada that makes use of your experience, education and expertise
  • Alternative careers
  • Networking
  • Informational interviews
  • Understanding and using social media effectively
  • Your elevator pitch and professional biography
  • Putting your resume and interviewing skills to the test
  • Giving and receiving feedback within the Canadian context
  • Successfully managing conflict in the workplace
  • The importance of soft skills, teamwork, initiative, and critical thinking

Eligibility

To be considered for the program, participants must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be an AIMGA member in good standing
  • Must be able to complete 80% of the program, which is equivalent to two absences
  • Must be committed to seeking employment or enrolling in an education program related to their alternative career path within the next six months
  • IRCC eligible
