    Full Job Description:
    Position Overview:
    The Department of the Dean’s Office in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Lab Assistant. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
    This position reports to the Director, Clinical Health/Services and Population Health Research.
    The position may sometimes require the ability to work flexible hours such as days, evenings and possibly the occasional weekend day to accommodate research activities.
    Position Description:
    Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
    – Perform specimen collection and process blood and urine samples following standard guidelines and universal precautions as well as requirements for individual study related laboratory manuals
    – direct patients to laboratory for blood work if required
    – inform research coordinator that patient is ready for the visit if required
    – perform venipuncture on adult patients after verification of patient identification according to laboratory protocol
    – label all samples collected, in accordance with standard laboratory procedures
    – enter patient and specimen data into the log sheets
    – check requisitions for missing or inaccurate information; follow up with research coordinator
    – centrifuge and aliquot serum and plasma to multiple pour-off tubes
    – prepare slides for differential count, as well as preparing HbA1C paper blots
    – perform specific lab analysis as required (urine dipstick, ESR, micro-capillary hematocrit and pregnancy tests)
    – Measure and pour off body fluid collection
    – process a variety of microbiology specimens, including labeling, packaging, and preparing for transportation according to biohazard protocol
    – deliver stat blood work to CLS lab if necessary
    – ensure the priority of requested testing (stat or routine) in collection and processing of samples
    – prepare waybills and package samples as diagnostic or infectious categories
    – maintain accurate records according to TDG regulation
    Qualifications / Requirements:
    – Graduate of an approved Medical Laboratory Assistant program
    – Current license as Medical Laboratory Assistant
    – Certified in Transfer of Dangerous Goods
    – Skills and knowledge to work to full scope of the Medical Laboratory Assistant
    – Current BCLS-HCP certification required
    – At least 1 year of recent medical laboratory assistant experience within the last 2 years preferably in a clinical research environment
    – Knowledge and experience related to clinical trial conduct preferred
    – Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice an asset
    – Demonstrated strong critical thinking skills
    – Demonstrated high functioning time-management and organizational skills and attention to detail required to function in a fast-paced, research environment
    – Strong organizational skills
    – Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills both verbal and written required
    – Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
    – Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint)
    – Knowledge of University core business systems is desirable
