Midwife

Midwives are primary health care providers. They are considered experts in normal pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. They are trained to order and interpret tests and discuss results. They also screen for physical, psychological, emotional, and social health issues. They are trained to refer to medical and other specialists when needed. Midwives provide care in client homes, clinics, hospitals, and birth centers.

It is provincially regulated discipline and requires a 4-year post-secondary degree in Midwifery. After completion of the degree the midwives have to get registered with their respective provincial regulatory bodies. As you gain more experience, the position and salary raises. There are other options of research, administration and academics that you can pursue after the degree in Midwifery.

The program is highly competitive and some college encourage 1 or 2 years of University Education in Health Care and Medical Sciences and some work and/or volunteer experience before the applying to the program.

Bridging programs for internationally educated midwives:

International Midwifery Pre-registration Program

This is a 9-month part-time bridging program for qualified midwives educated outside of Canada.

Internationally Educated Midwives Bridging Program

Based at the University of British Columbia, the IEMBP is designed to help midwives learn how to use their skills in a Canadian context.

The UQTR provides midwifery training for midwives trained outside of Canada who seek recognition of their diploma or training in order to obtain a license to practice in Québec.

Understanding and caring attitude; provide culturally appropriate and sensitive care; emotional and mental strength; good observation and listener; patience; ability to act on own initiative; ability to cope with distressing situations and to remain calm in stressful situations; and provide counselling to both clients and families.

To practice as a Midwife, one must be registered with the provincial bodies, for instance the College of Midwives of Alberta.

Internationally educated and experienced Midwifes may have their Prior Learning and Experience assessed (PLEA) to determine substantial equivalence to the Canadian requirements. For more information, visit here. Also, they can try above mentioned bridging programs.
