COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The Career Transition Program (CTP) assists IMGs who are considering a non-physician occupation within the Canadian health care system as a short, medium, or long-term career goal.
The goals of CTP are to:
- Increase IMGs’ overall knowledge and awareness of alternative career pathways and opportunities
- Provide IMGs with the tools necessary
to manager career transition. - Develop a career plan/portfolio
PROGRAM FORMAT:
The program consists of the following:
- 10 Career Workshops
- Guest Speakers
- Individual Coaching Sessions
- Networking and Mentoring Opportunities
- Creation of a Career Plan
- Reflections
- Program Evaluations and Follow up
WORKSHOP TOPICS:
Managing transitions, making the most of change, dealing with the loss of professional identity, finding a job in Canada that makes use of your experience, education and expertise, alternative careers, networking, informational interviews, understanding and using social media effectively, your professional biography, putting your resume and interviewing skills to the test, giving and receiving feedback within the Canadian context, successfully managing conflict in the workplace, and the importance of soft skills, teamwork, initiative, and critical thinking.
PROGRAM EXPECTATIONS INCLUDE:
- The facilitators will start and end classes on time
- Please arrive to class on time and be ready to commence
- Please attend each class
- Please email or message the program facilitator and/or the CTP
program coordinator if you are going to be late or absent - You will fill out evaluations/reflection logs and program surveys
If more than two weekly classes are missed, you will be withdrawn
from the program. This includes one-to-one coaching sessions.
LATE POLICY:
There is a lot for us to cover in the time we have with you. We are committed to starting and ending on time and therefore wish for you to arrive on time and ready to engage. Three lates are equivalent to one day missed. If you know you are going to miss a class or will be late, please inform the coordinator at edna@aimga.ca.
THE RIGHT PROGRAM:
At AIMGA, we strive to have the right person in the right seat at the right time. We want to make sure this is the right program at the right time for you, therefore, you have the first two classes to make this decision.
If for any reason you do not wish to continue with the program, please email the Career Transition Program Coordinator following the second class to let her know. This program will consist of weekly reading and assignments related to your career search in addition to attending classes. You should plan for a minimum of 2 to 3 hours per week outside of class time to complete assignments and to apply for jobs.
VIDEOS:
Throughout the program, we may ask you to introduce yourself and provide testimonials regarding different components of the program.
PHOTOGRAPHS:
As part of this program, you will be asked to provide a professional headshot. If attending the online program, please send your photo to the CTP Coordinator (edna@aimga.ca) within the first week of class. This photo will be used for your professional biography which you will begin working on in week 1.
FINAL NOTE:
We are grateful to have funding in order to offer you this program. We know the journey for IMGs is not an easy one. We are here to support you in the process of integrating into the healthcare system and your exploration of alternative careers. We hope that you will find this program to be a rewarding one and that your efforts will result in employment within healthcare.
