Description

The Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) Study Group assists Internationally Trained Physicians in preparing for the National Assessment Collaboration (NAC). The competencies and the objectives for the NAC OSCE are reviewed and the expectations of a PGY1 resident are outlined for the different case scenarios presented. The sessions focus on taking an organized history, clinical knowledge and skills, physical exam skills, the think-aloud technique, approach to the patient, ethics, professionalism, communication, and decision-making abilities.

** Proof of registration will be required to register and can be sent to Thaea (thaea@aimga.ca).

This study group will be facilitated by Dr. Tuga Yousif.

The online sessions will be held on Thursdays from 9 am to 12 pm for 12 weeks.

*PLEASE DO NOT REGISTER FOR THE TWO OTHER NAC OSCE GROUP SESSIONS IF REGISTERING FOR THIS  CLASS.

The program objectives are:

to understand the exam objectives, format, and assessment criteria;
to increase clinical knowledge, decision-making, and management across a broad range of cases through discussion on current evidence, practice, and feedback;
to review specific tasks such as case presentations, interpreting of results based on expected formats;
to enhance communication, cultural and language skills relative to patient-centered care and the Canadian context; and
to familiarize oneself with time frames allotted for demonstrating competencies

Description

This Study Group assists Internationally Trained Physicians in preparing for the NAC OSCE. Classes will be held online on Saturdays from 9 am to 12 pm for 12 weeks from Saturday, June 18th to Saturday, September 3rd. 

This study group is for those with proof of registration for the September exam.

Our staff is available to meet with members for the following purposes:

In general (30-minute consultations; information and orientation):
– to discuss your background training and experience;
– to provide guidance on pathways to licensure;
– to answer questions you may have about pathways to licensure, AIMGA’s services and programs, and other supports; and
– to determine your next step with regard to your goals.

Licensure Pathway Support (1-hour consultations):
Our AIMGA staff members are here to help you with your application to AIMGP, CaRMs, PRA-AB, other PRA programs in other provinces. These sessions are typically one hour in length to assist you by reviewing application submissions, resumes, and personal statements for grammatical correctness and clarity. AIMGA also offers a CaRMS Preparation Program which we highly recommend for those applying to CaRMS (Canadian Residency Matching System).

Employment Related Services (30-minute or 1-hour consultations):
Our AIMGA staff are here to help you achieve your employment goals. If you are looking for employment as a short-term or long-term goal, we are here to assist you. Support may include a discussion of your background, interests, and employment needs. Or, if you have a job you are interested in applying for, we can review your resume and/or cover letter for example. Or, if you’ve been called for an interview, book a mock interview session with us to help you prepare. We are also here to discuss other pathways in healthcare. If you are serious about exploring alternative career pathways in healthcare, we recommend you consider our Career Transition Program which will be offered in September and January.

Want to improve on your overall wellness? AIMGA has partnered with YW Calgary to offer Mindfulness for Life workshops for FREE for all IMGs. In this Lunch and Learn session, we will explore how mindfulness skills can be applied where and when it matters the most, in everyday life. We will introduce the workshop, how to sign up and other services provided by YW.

About Mindfulness for Life:

This eight-week program looks at the connection between mindfulness and overall wellness.   Delivered as a course, facilitators work with program participants to teach mindfulness skills and how to apply them where and when it matters the most, in everyday life. When mindfulness becomes a part of your daily life, there are many benefits including reduced feelings of stress, improved coping, the ability to recognize and appreciate pleasant feelings, and improved overall wellbeing.  This course is a good fit for anybody looking to improve their overall wellness in a group learning environment.

About YW Calgary:

YW Calgary is the largest and longest-serving women’s organization in Calgary. For more than a century, we have touched tens of thousands of lives and have continually evolved our programming to meet the changing needs of women in the community.

About the Presenter:

Tonia Rodgers BSW, MSW, RSW

Tonia is the Manager of Counselling and Personal Development at YW Calgary. She received her Bachelor of Social Work from Memorial University and her Master of Social Work from Dalhousie University. As a registered social worker with over thirteen years of experience, Tonia began her career in children’s services and later joined the non-profit sector to focus on family violence.  She has been in leadership roles for the past seven years, where she’s been able to share her passion for strengths-based leadership, as well as the prevention and treatment of family violence.

Akua Anyemedu, BA, MA, MSW, is an Intake Counsellor and a new member of the YW Calgary Counselling and Personal Development team. She has a Bachelors in Psychology from the University of Ghana and Masters in Gender Studies and Social Work from Memorial University of Newfoundland and the University of Windsor respectively. Over the last 10 years, Akua has worked in different capacities with international students, newcomers, youth, and families. As a new registered social worker, Akua is excited to collaborate with people on their mental health journey.

Shannon MacKinnon, BFA, BA, MSW, RSW
Shannon is currently the Clinical Supervisor for group programming within the Counselling and Personal Development department at YW Calgary. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Social Work degrees from the University of Calgary, and her Bachelor of Psychology from Concordia University in Montreal. She has been a registered social worker for eleven years, and has developed expertise in palliative and hospice care, domestic violence, and adult mental health. She has been in leadership roles for three of the five years she has worked for YW Calgary. She maintains a small private practice, and is still actively engaged in arts events locally.

Description

The Medical Communication Assessment Program (MCAP) is a new online program offered by AIMGA and is intended for IMGs who wish to enhance their understanding of patient-centered care, communication skills, and their cultural competence. The goals of MCAP are:

• To meet the needs of International Medical Graduates by providing effective training and resources to work successfully in the Canadian healthcare system
• To prepare IMGs who are either registered to take the NAC OSCE, applying to the CaRMS cycle, or PRA eligible.

The program is fully funded by IRCC and is open to IRCC eligible applicants in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba who are applying to 2023/4 CaRMS cycle, or are PRA ready.
MCAP Online includes synchronous classes accompanied by supplementary web-based modules. The classes are taught by a medical communication instructor and practicing physicians and involve interactions with standardized patients and feedback that is meant to improve the participant’s performance according to the Canadian context.
In addition to the currently running cohort (January 25th-April 16th 2022), the program will be offered from April to June.
All IMGs who meet the program eligibility criteria are welcome to apply.
