Overview
AIMGA’s Observership Program is open throughout the year and accommodates IMGs who qualify for program participation. The observerships are an important step of the residency application process as they offer an excellent opportunity for IMGs to learn in the specific context of the Canadian healthcare system, to increase knowledge, to build professional networks, and to obtain feedback from licensed Alberta physicians and medical educators.
Eligibility Criteria
IMGs who apply to the observership program must meet the following criteria:
- Must be IRCC eligible (i.e., Permanent Resident, Refugee, Temporary Resident)
- Must be an active member of AIMGA in good standing
- Must be an Alberta resident
- Must have passed the MCCQE1
- Must have a minimum of an overall score of 6.5 on IELTS/Academic
Note: This program is made possible by funding from IRCC and therefore, we are only able to accommodate those who are IRCC eligible. Please note, there is a limited number of seats for this program.
AIMGA reserves the right to select the most suitable participants form all qualified IMG applicants. The application process will be closed when the number of seats have been filled and will reopen when funding is available.
Application Process
Please review and complete the following steps if you meet the eligibility criteria and would like to be considered for the program:
Step 1: Complete the online application form. Please note, the application form will ask you for proof of MCCQE1 and IELTS. You will also be asked to submit a professional biography, which will be sent to the preceptor along with your contact information and emergency contact information.
Step 2: If you are matched you will be invited to attend the program, and you will then attend the 2-hour mandatory Observership Orientation.
Step 3: Adhere to the Observership Agreement guidelines, which are covered in the Observership Orientation.
Step 4: Complete the 50 observership hours in the time frame specified (4-6 weeks) and return all paperwork as required.
Note: The Observership placements are offered mainly in Family Medicine; however, based on the availability of a preceptor and the background experience and training of the observer in a specified specialty, AIMGA will make an attempt to support such placements where possible.
