Sample 3 (Case 12) – Abortion
Successful communication in this case depends on the degree to which the doctor is aware of the potential stigmas attached to the procedure, and sensitive to the patient’s ambiguous feelings and concern for confidentiality. A successful interview is one in which the physician offers a partnership, provides support, expresses concern, understanding, and willingness to help.
In this viewing of the video, keep in mind the importance of these elements. Look for evidence that the doctor:
- Provides opportunity to allow the patient to set the tone of the interview
- Clarifies the reasons behind the patient’s decision
- Sensitively clarifies the firmness of the decision
- Offers to arrange the termination
- Demonstrates concern for guarding her confidentiality
- Encourages patient to contribute thoughts: ideas, suggestions and preferences
- Checks with patient: if plans are accepted; if concerns have been addressed
- Deals sensitively with topics
